Itinerary
Day 1 - Thursday - 25 August
Zambezi Man registration from 09h00 until 15h00 at Kingdom Hotel.
There will be a pre-race briefing at 17h00 - also at the KINGDOM, we will allocate everyone into groups at this time.
Day 2 - Friday - 26 August
The day starts at 06h30 at the Kingdom where all Bikes and any accessories you may need for the cycle leg will have to be checked in at this time. This 'check-in' will be followed by a safety briefing on the rafting, issuing of lifejackets, helmets and paddles, after which all participants will be required to walk to the start point, being in the boiling pot in the gorge below the Victoria Falls.
Once in the Gorge, participants will familiarize themselves with the raft and paddling skills before setting off together from below the mighty Victoria Falls to the Dam Site rapids a distance of approximately 50km. This paddle will include two portages around two grade 6 rapids. The river to be paddled will include some of the largest rapids rafted in the world. This section is not a race, but there will be no dilly dallying as the distance to be covered is vast. It will be a strenuous section and as such is not for the faint hearted. At the end of the raft section, participants will walk out of the Gorge, this involves a 2km hike out of the Gorge followed by a 2 km hike along the top of the gorge to the location of the overnight camp. Your bikes, as well as a bag of personal effects / bike gear etc, will have been transported to the camp to await your arrival.
Overnight is camping on the top of the gorge at the dam site. There will be a local mechanic on site to assist with any final checks and/or adjustments to anyone's bike.
You will need to complete the whole route from the boiling pot position to the Dam Site in order to continue with the next discipline. Helmets and life jackets supplied. Should you not have been able to complete it successfully, you may continue non-competitively.
Overnight camping. Lunch on the banks of the river, dinner and drinks are all included this day.
Day 3 - Saturday - 27 August
Breakfast starts at 05h30 and the cycling section will start at 07h00. The cycle leg will be approx 100 km's, all off road and no tar. Finish will be at the *Victoria Falls boat club, and water tables for the cycling event will be at the 30 km, 60 & 80 km marks. With marshals and tape marking any route adjustments, the areas through which we are cycling is predominantly Communal land and private reserve. There is a 12km technical section to start off with then about 20km of secondary road, ending with 30km of very technical track along the edges of the gorge within which the rafting was conducted. The terrain is mostly rocky with sections of Kalahari sand and will end with a short section of tar to the finish line.
*Please check at registration if the finish area has been altered, and it will also be covered in the briefing.
Day 4 - Sunday - 28 August
Marathon day. The full marathon will start at 06h30, the half marathon at 07h00 and the fun run at 07h15. All start from opposite The Kingdom Hotel, outside the entrance to the Victoria Falls Hotel.
The finish of all races will be at the Vic Falls primary school, here all participants can enjoy the festive atmosphere before your transfer back to your hotel. Participants do have the option of doing the half marathon, this however does not qualify for the Zambezi Man title.
Late afternoon you will be picked up from your hotel/lodge and transferred to enjoy the official sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River in celebration of the race. While on the boat all local drinks, wine, beers, mixers, spirits, mineral water and snacks are included. From here you will be transferred to the Marathon After Party. There will be food stalls at the party to buy supper from and drinks will be available from a cash bar. Return transfers to all hotel/lodges will be on an hourly basis up until 00h00.
The title of Zambezi Man and all associated prizes together with medals will be awarded on the BOAT CRUISE - so make sure you are there !
